What are hemorrhoids?
Also known as piles, hemorrhoids are swollen veins in the anal and rectal area. Although they’re the most regular cause of rectal bleeding, hemorrhoids are rarely dangerous. Hemorrhoids are very common. About three of four adults experience them at some point in their lives.
What causes them?
There are several possible causes of hemorrhoids. They usually develop as a result of increased pressure on the veins in the anal and lower rectal areas. This can be due to straining during bowel movement, wrong form when lifting heavy objects, or the increased pressure on these veins during pregnancy.
How can you tell if they’re hemorrhoids?
Rectal bleeding is just one of the signs of hemorrhoids. Other signs and symptoms to watch out for include anal itching, swelling around the area, and a lump near the anus that may be sensitive or painful to touch.
When should you see a doctor?
Hemorrhoids may cause some discomfort but they’re rarely dangerous. Sometimes the the symptoms may decrease in time, but unless the source of the hemorrhoid is treated, usually they return.
Although they are not typically harmful, hemorrhoids can be extremely uncomfortable to live with. If you’re tired of living with discomfort, Premier Surgical Hemorrhoid Center in Knoxville offers gentle, effective treatment to help.
Infrared Coagulation
Infrared photocoagulation or coagulation therapy is Premier’s most popular hemorrhoid treatment option. Usually recommended for small to medium-sized internal hemorrhoids, infrared coagulation involves the use of a small device that creates an intense beam of infrared light.
The heat from the infrared light causes the formation of scar tissue that cuts off the blood supply to the hemorrhoid. When the hemorrhoid ‘dies,’ it creates a scar on the wall of the anal canal. This scar tissue holds the nearby veins in place so they won’t bulge.
